Xenoart
by
Willard Van De Bogart

The origins of the word xeno comes from the Greek word, xenos, that means stranger, guest, host or foreigner. The word is an adjective and is used as a combining form that makes compound words such as xenoliguistics, xenobiotic or xenophobia. There are in fact 348 words in the English language starting with xeno. However, there are only 6 words containing 7 letters with xeno i.e. xenolog, xenomas, xenonym, xenopic, xenosis and xenotic. I am here introducing a seventh word which is “xenoart”. My reason for introducing xenoart is to recognize that artistic expression using xeno as an adjective to describe a form of art that is created with the thought in mind that there is something unfamiliar but represents a reality occupied by entities that are from other worlds. Xenolinguistics has been a study of mine for over 40 years. It explores alien languages using sound. Specifically, sounds made from electronic synthesizers. But, because of my focusing on languages that speculatively exists with other civilizations in our universe I inadvertently became deeply involved in alien life and all its parameters. The xeno factor of the other or the stranger or guest visiting our home planet broadened in its scope to where I became immersed in the phenomenon of extraterrestrial life. This evolved to many forms of life creations that could evolve in the universe that used many forms of language to communicate and share information. For example, variations is star light intensity and variability could be factored into our evolution, whereby, we would use sound and light as a means of communicating. Fiber optics and synthesizers may become the only means we will be able to share our knowledge in the future.
How we share our consciousness as we learn how to integrate more of the knowledge of extraterrestrial life is what a xenoartist does. The xenoartist embraces the unknown as an opportunity to absorb anomalous mental experiences as a doorway into realms of existence with life forms abounding in how they communicate. Traditional artists have always been prescient to the social order whereas xenoartists are prescient to the universal order. I am reminded of the native American Indian tribe Cahuilla near the Anza Borrego Desert in Southern California. They have the annual Bird Song festival celebrating their migration to the West. The tone of the birds reflects the environment they live in. Hearing those bird songs is a direct relationship to nature’s forces. Becoming sensitive to bird songs also enables the xenoartist to travel to distant worlds on the reflections of star light. The xenoartist reflects the stories from other worlds. Xenoart is a reflection of becoming sensitive to voices that visit us from afar and can come in many forms. Wind spirits are the most revealing to a highly sensitive xenoartist. The Orang Asli indigenous people of the jungles of Malaysia carve wood gathered from swamps to tell the story of the wind spirits The Kachina dolls from the Hopi Indians tell stories of ancestors and predict cosmic occurrences. Kokopeli plays his flute from thousands of petroglyphs. The Star people are a part of all creation stories. Our xeno represents the unfamiliar and unknown visitors who permeate the xenoartist’s interpretation of entering other worlds and reveals a way of life that becomes the source for their art work.
Xenoart is more that myth making or seeing the archetypal symbols falling on the projection screen of life. Xenoart is life, but life from another side of our reality. And as there are many sides to our reality it follows that those that visit us do so because they have a new heightened sense of awareness requiring a new sense of expression, which is why I give it the name xenoart. But, gaining access to this new other that is permeating our sensorium there is also an ongoing impediment to our sensitivity that comes from a saturated media environment run by algorithms and artificial interactions with data sets that mirror the feedback coming from those interactions. Modern humankind is caught up in a loop of self-reinforcement and not encouraged to respect things unseen, unknown and unfamiliar.
There are no curatorial assistants to offer much guidance on how to experience a xenoartists’s creation. The receptivity of the new patterns and associations made by xenoartists are, however, recognized by another xenoartist’s work. There lurks within a xenoartists expression a nuance of the different and unfamiliar. After 40 years of creating electronic music I am closer to a homogeneous relationship with the unfamiliar than when I started. I suppose it’s easy to provide clues on how to recognize xenoart. One could offer unrecognized associations between known objects or a rhythm that repeats itself in many ascending and descending different ways. But, by far xenoart has the quality of existence that is not from a framework we recognize but none the less exudes a presence
